Did I just shoot myself in the foot Hi everyone, I am looking for a reality check on a negotiation I just attempted. I’m an early career engineer and currently juggling two very different offers: Offer A (The Summer program): A 3 month Devops contract at a well known big AI company. It pays exceptionally well. However, there is no guarantee of a permanent role after the 3 months. I also already successfully negotiated pushing the start date back a month so I could finish up my current job, meaning I'd be starting in July. I am a big believer of this company's vision and it really aligns well with what I want to do in the future. They when giving me the offer reiterated that they are looking for someone to hire, and they would really look forward to hiring me (if I do well) after the program. Offer B (The Safety Net): An 18 month Platform Engineer early careers program at a big tech company. The pay is significantly lower initially, about 2k less than the first offer per month. This starts in September. It also somewhat aligns with what I want to do in the future. The Problem: Offer A ends in october. Offer B begins in early September. They overlap. Since Offer A has no guarantee of a return offer, I don't want to drop Offer B and risk being completely unemployed in October. I already signed the non binding offer letter for Offer A (but not the official legal labor contract yet). I just emailed the recruiter for Offer A. I was completely transparent: I told them they are my first choice, but I received a full time offer for September. Because I need to protect my job security if they don't extend me, I asked if we could adjust the 3 month contract to a 2 month contract so I can do both. My questions are: 1. Is this a reasonable request, or did I just shoot myself in the foot? Would they rescind the offer because I asked to shorten it? 2. From a hiring manager's perspective, is it worth training an early career engineer for only 8 weeks and is it possible to see if he is a good fit for the team? Would you be kinda irritated if a new team member asks this kind of request, saying he has a backup option 3. If they say 3 months is strictly required and refuse to change it, how would you handle the follow up call? Walk away from the high paying summer job, or drop the 18 month safe job and take the gamble? [link] [handle]
