Description
Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) — a role more developers are starting to explore.
Payrate currently in USA 140K+ per annum
I recently started learning more about FDE and found the concept quite interesting.
In simple terms, an FDE works on real customer problems rather than only working from predefined development requirements.
The work can involve:
• Python and APIs
• SQL and data pipelines
• Cloud platforms
• Docker and CI/CD
• Generative AI and LLMs
• RAG and vector databases
• AI agents
• Testing and deployment
• Understanding customer requirements
What makes the role different is the combination of engineering and problem solving.
You might start with a simple customer requirement, understand what they actually need, design the technical approach, build it, connect it with their existing systems, deploy it and then improve it based on feedback.
So, in very simple terms:
Understand the problem → Build the solution → Deploy it → Make it work in the real world.
I think developers from Python, Java, .NET, Data Engineering, Cloud, DevOps, Full Stack and AI/ML backgrounds may find this career path interesting.
Has anyone here worked as a Forward Deployed Engineer or explored this career path?
Would be interested to hear your experience.
