FPGA: market
FPGA Engineer — engineer who designs digital circuits for programmable logic integrated circuits — FPGAs. This is a special engineering specialization: the FPGA engineer doesn't write a program in the conventional sense — they describe hardware, a digital circuit, which is then physically configured inside the chip. FPGAs allow implementation of arbitrary digital logic "in hardware" and are used where very high speed, parallelism and real-time signal processing are needed: telecom and communications, digital signal processing (DSP), radar, high-speed interfaces, aerospace and defense, compute accelerators, measurement equipment. Important: FPGA is a hardware role, closer to electronics and digital circuit design than to programming; it is the most isolated in the embedded family and requires a separate skill set (see separate question). Role family: FPGA Engineer / Developer (digital circuit design for FPGAs), Digital Design Engineer (digital design), FPGA Verification Engineer (verification — checking circuit correctness, a separate sub-specialization), DSP Engineer (digital signal processing on FPGA), ASIC Engineer (custom IC design — related, even more specialized area), Senior FPGA Engineer. Responsibilities: digital circuit design in hardware description languages, implementation of signal processing algorithms and protocols "in hardware", verification and modeling (simulation) of developed circuits, implementation of high-speed interfaces, optimization for speed and chip resources, debugging on real boards. Stack 2026: hardware description languages (HDL) — Verilog, SystemVerilog, VHDL (key tools of the profession); digital circuit design and logic design; CAD for FPGAs (FPGA vendor development environments — AMD/Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, and in CIS increasingly domestic FPGAs and tools — import substitution); simulation and verification (ModelSim/QuestaSim, UVM verification methodology); understanding of DSP (for signal tasks), timing analysis, work with oscilloscope and logic analyzer, reading schematics. Top skills: python, c++, matlab, linux, git. 8% — remote (role tied to hardware and classified enterprises). Frequently asked questions

What stack and skills are most often required from FPGA engineer?
Top skills: python, c++, matlab, linux, git. Hardware description languages (HDL) — main tools of the profession: Verilog and SystemVerilog (dominate in new projects), VHDL (widespread, especially in RF and in defense industry). Important to understand: HDL — not programming languages, they describe a digital circuit, not a command sequence. Digital circuit design and logic design — foundation: logic gates, flip-flops, finite state machines, synchronous design, clocking. CAD for FPGA — FPGA vendor development environments (AMD/Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus; in CIS — domestic FPGAs and tools amid import substitution). Simulation and verification — checking circuit correctness before loading into hardware (ModelSim/QuestaSim; UVM methodology for serious verification). Timing analysis — ensure the circuit works at the needed frequency. DSP — digital signal processing (for signal tasks, common in FPGA). High-speed interfaces and protocols. On-hardware debugging — oscilloscope, logic analyzer, FPGA built-in debugging means. Electronics — deeper understanding than for software-embedded. English — documentation. The main thing: FPGA requires "hardware" thinking — designing a parallel-working circuit rather than writing sequential code; that's the main skill and the main difficulty of entry.
FPGA Engineer vs Embedded Software — what's the difference?
This is the most important to understand about FPGA: despite both roles being in the embedded family, these are fundamentally different professions. Embedded Software — is programming: engineer writes code (in C) that is sequentially executed by the microcontroller's processor (see /research/embedded/embedded-sw). FPGA Engineer — is hardware design: engineer in a hardware description language (Verilog / VHDL) describes a digital circuit, which is then physically configured inside the FPGA and works in parallel, like real hardware. Key difference in thinking: programmer thinks in a sequence of commands in time; FPGA engineer thinks in parallel-working hardware blocks — everything in the circuit happens simultaneously. This is a completely different way of thinking, and transition between roles — not "language change" but engineering paradigm change. FPGA is closer to electronics and digital circuit design, to the electronic engineer specialty, than to programming. When you need FPGA, not a processor: when extreme speed, hard parallelism, real-time signal processing, non-standard high-speed interfaces are needed — what a regular processor can't pull off. Conclusion: FPGA — the most isolated role in embedded; it should be chosen consciously, understanding that it's hardware engineering, not a variety of programming.
Verilog or VHDL — what to learn for FPGA engineer in 2026?
These are the two main hardware description languages (HDL), and both are used. Verilog and its extended version SystemVerilog — dominate in most new projects in the world; SystemVerilog is also the main language for verification (UVM methodology). Verilog is syntactically closer to C, many consider it easier for entry. VHDL — more strict, verbose, "pedantic" language; historically widespread in Europe, in aerospace and defense industry, and in RF its share is noticeably higher than the world average — many projects and enterprises on VHDL. What to learn in 2026: ideally — both, because which language will be at a specific workplace depends on the company and project (and in RF you can really encounter both). If choosing the first: SystemVerilog/Verilog — as more in-demand globally and universal (plus also needed for verification); VHDL — mandatory to add, especially if you're aiming at Russian radio electronics and defense industry, where there's a lot of it. But, as with embedded, language is only a tool: the main thing in FPGA is not HDL syntax but digital design (ability to think in circuit, finite state machines, synchronous design); this transfers between languages and is the hardest to master.
What exactly does an FPGA engineer do?
FPGA engineer designs digital circuits that are implemented "in hardware" inside FPGAs. 1) Task analysis — understand what function needs to be implemented in hardware (signal processing algorithm, protocol, interface, accelerator) and why FPGA specifically is needed for it. 2) Circuit architecture design — think through what parallel-working blocks the digital circuit will consist of, how they interact, how clocking and data flows are organized. 3) Description in HDL — implement the circuit in Verilog / SystemVerilog / VHDL: modules, finite state machines, pipelines, logic. 4) Simulation — check circuit behavior in simulator on test stimuli before loading into real FPGA (an error is cheaper to find in simulation). 5) Verification — serious correctness check (on complex projects — separate methodology, UVM); in large teams verification — separate role. 6) Synthesis and implementation — through CAD turn HDL description into configuration for specific FPGA; timing analysis — achieve the circuit working at the needed frequency. 7) On-hardware debugging — load into real FPGA board, with oscilloscope, logic analyzer and built-in debugging means make sure everything works. 8) Optimization — fit within chip resources (logic cells, memory, DSP blocks) and frequency and power requirements. Key: FPGA engineer creates hardware in the form of description — this is engineering of digital circuits, requiring hardware thinking and precision (error in hardware logic is costly).
Can you work as FPGA engineer remotely?
Mostly no — FPGA is one of the least remote-compatible engineering specializations. 8% of FPGA jobs are remote or hybrid, but in reality work is strongly location-bound. Reasons: 1) Hardware and instruments — final debugging and circuit verification are done on a real board with FPGA, with oscilloscope, logic analyzer, measurement equipment; part of the work (HDL description, simulation) is theoretically remote, but the project can't be finished without hardware access. 2) Classified enterprises — in CIS the dominant share of FPGA development falls on telecom, radio electronics, aerospace and defense industry; these are classified enterprises where remote work is restricted or prohibited, and often clearance is required. 3) Expensive licensed software and equipment — CAD and development boards are tied to the workplace. Bottom line: FPGA — predominantly an office role; remote positions are a great rarity. If remote is critical for you, FPGA is the least suitable specialization in this sense.
How to start an FPGA engineer career in 2026?
FPGA — knowledge-intensive hardware specialization with a high entry threshold; people come to it most often with profile education (radio engineering, microelectronics, digital technology), but it's really possible to enter with serious self-study. Roadmap: 1) Digital circuit design — this is the foundation, more important than any language: logic gates, flip-flops, registers, counters, finite state machines, synchronous design, clocking concept. 2) Hardware thinking — learn to think in a parallel-working circuit, not sequential code; this is the main and most difficult part of transitioning to FPGA. 3) HDL language — Verilog / SystemVerilog (recommended first) or VHDL; learn to describe circuits, not "program". 4) Simulation — master the simulator, learn to write test environments (testbench) and check circuits. 5) CAD and real board — take an inexpensive FPGA development board, master the development environment, go through the full cycle: description → simulation → synthesis → loading into hardware. 6) Timing and resources — understand timing analysis, chip limitations. 7) DSP basics — if signal processing is interesting. 8) Pet projects on board — implement real digital circuits; FPGA engineer portfolio — working projects on hardware. Resources: digital circuit design and HDL textbooks, FPGA courses, Vivado / Quartus documentation, FPGA communities; profile university programs give the strongest base. Prepare to buy a development board — practice on real FPGA is mandatory.
How many FPGA engineer openings in CIS and Europe?
131 active open FPGA Engineer jobs in Zorky CRM sample — very narrow specialization. Real market: FPGA — extremely niche, knowledge-intensive area, objectively few vacancies; and a significant part of the market — telecom, radio electronics, defense and aerospace industry, i.e. classified enterprises whose vacancies are not fully represented in open sources. The role is called «FPGA engineer», «FPGA engineer», «FPGA developer», «digital design engineer». Geography: Russia / remote / Belarus. Sources: hh.ru, Habr Career, getmatch, LinkedIn, Telegram (FPGA and microelectronics communities, job channels). Market is small but stable, with stable shortage of personnel; concentrated in large engineering centers. NB: the Embedded / IoT direction historically had auto-classification difficulties for vacancies — the visible number may understate the market.
What skills does a Senior FPGA engineer need?
Senior FPGA Engineer designs complex digital systems and solves knowledge-intensive engineering tasks. Digital design at expert level: design complex digital architectures — pipelines, multi-clock systems, complex finite state machines; deeply understand synchronous design, metastability, clock domain crossings (CDC).
